Raquel BaumanLocation # - Arte de Raquel, 122 Western Ave, Essence of Culture, #3-19Tissue paper collage and suble ink paintings My tissue paper collages emerged from a mishap while I was in high school in Houston long ago. I spilled water on a stack of tissue paper of different colors and found the transformation of the papers texture and the new and blended colors that emerged fascinating. Water makes the images fluid and the colors appear to have no boarders, they move subtly from one to another. My ink paintings emerged in like fashion. I was not paying attention in the "ink cross-hatching" class and a drop of ink fell onto wet paper and revealed a flower with a dark center and delicate petals. The vibrant colors of the collages do not fade over time. The delicate lines of my ink paintings remain fluid. |

Trees have evolved into “calligraphic-like” brushstrokes and are not of any specific language. Although Asian in character, my work does inspire an Eastern feeling.. I also use pattern as a kind of natural expressive “mark” that clearly defines and unifies the image. The work is also reminiscent of textiles, where there is a repetitive and textural feeling as are shown in fabrics. I share a studio in an old textile mill in Lowell and am inspired by the textiles of a past era.
