Raquel BaumanLocation #2 - Arte de Raquel, 122 Western Ave, Essence of Culture, #319Tissue paper collage and suble ink paintings My tissue paper collages emerged from a mishap while I was in high school in Houston long ago. I spilled water on a stack of tissue paper of different colors and found the transformation of the papers texture and the new and blended colors that emerged fascinating. Water makes the images fluid and the colors appear to have no boarders, they move subtly from one to another. My ink paintings emerged in like fashion. I was not paying attention in the "ink cross-hatching" class and a drop of ink fell onto wet paper and revealed a flower with a dark center and delicate petals. The vibrant colors of the collages do not fade over time. The delicate lines of my ink paintings remain fluid. |

Gillian FrazierLocation #2 -Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, #508AColorful fabric-like drawings and paintings In my most current series, I begin by abstracting elements of nature through the use of brushstrokes and patterns. Trees have evolved into “calligraphic-like” brushstrokes and are not of any specific language. Although Asian in character, my work does inspire an Eastern feeling.. I also use pattern as a kind of natural expressive “mark” that clearly defines and unifies the image. The work is also reminiscent of textiles, where there is a repetitive and textural feeling as are shown in fabrics. I share a studio in an old textile mill in Lowell and am inspired by the textiles of a past era.

I work quickly and intuitively. My goals are to convey and explore personality and emotion, and to create paintings that engage the eye. Some pieces might suggest relationships or a story, others a moment in time, an abstraction, or perhaps a landscape. In all my work, I aim to let whatever occurs between my eyes and my hand happen as freely and intuitively as possible. I hope you, the viewer, respond with equal spontaneity. |

I strive to preserve what I see through my paintings and photography. As an American-born, Chinese, I am attentive of how one's eyes can be colored by another's veil, sewn by external influences. Art frees us and ignores rigid perceptions. My artwork serves this purpose of revealing the essence in our experiences highlighted by people, places, and activities. I like to experiment with the concept of how combinations of geometry, colors, tones, and textures trigger emotions, so that I seek to understand what the mind perceives as beautiful, interesting and satiating. |

Nancy NovakLocation #2 - Steel Door Imaging Studio, 122 Western Ave, #507Fine Art Photography For the longest time I have always wanted to showcase the beauty of flowers. While I have photographed traditional well known flowers, I am currently working on a series on wildflowers; the flowers you find on the side of the road, the flowers people consider weeds. It is my goal to elevate these lowly flowers into a higher art form. |

Jennie SandbergLocation #2 - Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Ave, #318Spirit-inspired art in acrylic, oil, and pastel Empathic since I was a child, I have always known that there is a world that exists beyond the five senses. As a painter, I try to capture the world that I can sense but not describe in words. Painting allows me to connect to this world, a world that is filled with love, light, and beauty. When I paint a landscape, I try to capture the energy of the scene before me. Lately, I have been experimenting with a more spontaneous style, allowing the paintings to emerge from the surface.

Ashlee Welz SmithLocation #2 - Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Ave, #520Figurative Oil Paintings I work from photographs that catch people in between poses or in the midst of changing expressions. To me, these are the downbeats that make us human. Painting allows me to examine them and bring them to life. Through the deletion of extraneous information, the variation in my brush strokes, or the emphasis of a particular color; I encourages the viewer to reconsider and reevaluate the ‘ordinary’ downtime that makes everyday life extraordinary.

Margot StageLocation #2 - Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, # 512simply spectacular fiber art! One way to describe my work is "painting with fabric". But cloth has special, delicious qualities -- it frays and folds, has infinite textural possibilities, and can be stitched, dyed, printed, painted and embellished with natual objects and beads. Finding fiber as a fine art form was a magical discovery I made about 6 years ago. |

Glenn W SzegedyLocation #2 - Western Ave Studios, 122 Western Avenue, #325Stone, wood, sculpture -printmaker-silk painting I have been working out my studio at Western Ave. from the first day it opened. My true joy is carving. Wood and stone are my primary materials. When time for a change of pace arrives and three dimensional work is complete, I usually begin printmaking, working mostly in drypoint etch fashion. When color becomes a need, I always have silk painting, which lets me play around with color in an almost endless fashion. |

Kellie WeeksLocation #8 - Studio II, 256 Market StreetExploring relationships using color and space. My work is an exploration of relationships and spaces. I search and investigate these ideas from the world surrounding me - not exclusive to human contact, but including all beings. I seek out simple forms and juxtapose these configurations in order to make a statement about my world. Color is a formidable key to my art - I feel like it unlocks the doors to my soul.

Rebekah WetmoreLocation #2 - Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Ave Studio #502Figurative paintings, group portraits I present images of ordinary people, objects, and places. In paintings these subjects transcend their ordinariness, through attentive and affectionate observation and translation to the active, two-dimensional paint surface. My paintings point to the modest loveliness of the world, and they invite the viewer to take note.

Gregory WrightLocation #2 - Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, #521Abstract Paintings in Oil and Encaustic My art today, abstract in nature, is a visual reaction and materialization of emotions. I paint intuitively in oil and encaustic. I am inspired by landscape formation and the essence of light. I explore sinuous organic shapes and figurative motifs. Through the juxtaposition of translucent layers of color atop multi-textural grounds and the addition of surprise embellishments, the effect is captured. |
